Helene Roylance will instruct a step-by-step painting class at the Fremont Art Association. Discover the beauty and versatility of watercolor in this beginner-friendly class. You’ll learn essential techniques such as brush control, color mixing, and layering washes, while exploring how to capture light, mood, and texture. No experience is required—just bring your curiosity and creativity. By the end of class, you’ll have the skills and confidence to continue painting on your own.
Level: All, beginners welcome

Materials Needed:

Plastic table covering for your space ( I can give you one also)

Mijello or similar airtight plastic watercolor palette with at least 16-18 wells-includes lid. $11 Example

Watercolor brush size # 12 or #14 round; Princeton or similar. Avoid brushes that say "acrylic", they do not hold water well. Not always recommended to buy ‘sets’ of brushes because you may not need all of them.

Watercolor Paints in tubes.

Individual Paint tube colors: yellow, orange, alizarin crimson or other red, sap green, violet, burnt sienna, cobalt blue, Ultra-marine blue tube paints. Student grade paints like Cotman or Reeves. Professional grade paints like Daniel Smith and Windsor Newton are excellent watercolor paints.

Cold Pressed 140 lb watercolor paper (look for 100% cotton)

Arches or Fabriano are excellent paper.

Water container—cottage cheese containers are great size. A 2-sided like this one allows for clean and dirty water kept separate.

Viva Signature paper towels (they are non-quilted)

Ruler and pencil, art eraser (kneaded or Tombow)

about the instructor
Helene discovered her love of art at a young age and has explored many creative outlets, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography. Inspired by her travels and her love of nature, she now finds watercolor the perfect medium to capture both beauty and mood. In this beginner watercolor class, Helene will guide students through the fundamentals of watercolor—such as brush techniques, color mixing, and layering washes—while encouraging them to explore their own creativity. Her goal is to help each student gain confidence, develop new skills, and experience the joy of painting with watercolor.
