  • PS-102 - Color Workflow and Alternative Media
    Beginner-Intermediate-Advanced

    This class will show you how to make prints that come our correctly with a minimum amount of wasted paper and ink.

    The color managed workflow is a little difficult to understand but if you do not master it your trash can will be full of wasted paper, ink and time.

    This class will make give you the information you need to start getting good prints on the first try.

    o Monitor Profiling
    o Input Device Calibration
    o Printer Profiling
    o Using Standard Images
    o Using Color/Grayscale References
    o Get controlled results with outside printers

    We will also examine a wide range of alternative media and art papers for ink jet printing.

    Applies to all ink jet printers regardless of cost or brand.

    The Fremont Art Association is honored to offer an outstanding watercolor workshop with award-winning artist, Claire SchroevenVerbiest, a Belgian native who lived in the Congo and in Germany before moving to San Jose, California with her husband and two children. As a signature member of several art societies, Claire is considered one of the finest watercolor and pastel artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her painting Haute Cuisine received the High Winds Medal at the American Watercolor Society’s annual exhibition. She is well known for her lively, crisp and truthful depictions of people, landscapes, flowers and objects and for her distinctive use of color. She conducts watercolor and pastel painting classes and workshops throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Triton Museum of Art of Santa Clara displayed 29 of her original pastel paintings and she frequently acts as a juror for local art shows.

  • PP1 – Environmental Portraiture – Available Light
    Beginner – Intermediate - Advanced

    In this class we will show how to make portraits outdoors with reflectors and subtractive lighting.

    Learn some basic ways to use available light and inexpensive “5 in 1” reflectors and even more inexpensive fomecor reflectors to obtain professional lighting.

    Find out about the appropriate focal length lenses for different types of poses and the pros and cons of using camera supports. We will cover stopping power and appropriate f stops for portrait photography.

  • PP2 – Using Photoshop/Elements to proof your shoot and retouch faces.
    Beginner – Intermediate - Advanced

    We will cover the workflow of a portrait shoot from the camera originals to finished proofs and then on to a retouched file ready for printing.

    From the proofs we will pick a shot and do some basic retouching on the subjects face, hair, garments and background. Learn to remove blemishes, control facial highlights, fix wrinkled clothing and more...

    o Adjust color and density on hundreds of file quickly
    o Working with RAW images
    o Make proofs as sheets, individual files or web galleries
    o Remove blemishes
    o Ease wrinkles
    o Eliminate glossy facial highlights
    o Fix garments and backgrounds
    o Clean up hairlines

    You can perform the image editing functions taught in this class with either Photoshop or Elements.

    Intermediate - Advanced

    In this class we will work with DSLR Speedlights to make flash filled portraits.

    This advanced technique is rendered simple due to the TLL modes of the new flash units and the instant viewing feature of digital cameras.

    We will use available light augmented with the Speedlights, light control materials and the “5 in 1” reflectors to make professional level portrait images.

    Required materials: DSLR Digital camera and Speedlight type flash.

    In this class we will cover more advanced cosmetic retouching methods and strategies.

    o Control the catch lights in your subjects eyes
    o Correct the shape of your images to keep the camera from making the subjects look heavier then they really are...
    o Basic burning, dodging and color correction/enhancement methods used on portraits to whiten teeth, color eyes and direct the viewers attention
    o Make picture packages

    Beginner-Intermediate-Advanced

    In this class we will learn to make stitched panoramic photographs using Photoshop and a variety of free tools. Most cameras come with a stitching program and there are a number of capable freeware stitching programs.

    We will take a short photo walk at the Niles Park and take some image sequences. We will then return and stitch the images together to make completed panoramic and vertoramic photographs.

    o Use either tripod or handheld
    o Correct lens focal lengths and apertures
    o Proper overlap amounts
    o Get 20-75 megapixel images with your 10mp camera

    Required equipment: Digital camera (Pocket or DSLR) and computer with (often free) stitching software
